Captain of Team Nigeria’s boxing team to the Commonwealth Games, Efetobor Apochi, overwhelmed Isle of Man’s Krystian Borucki in the heavyweight 91kg class on Sunday.
The 26-year-old is the only Nigerian to book Wednesday’s quarter-finals return date, as Wasiu Shogbamu and Wasiu Taiwo lost their light welterwight and flyweight categories fight respectively.
Apochi, will face Jai Opetaia, 19,- the youngest Australian Olympian who competed at the age of 17 at the London Games two years ago- on July 30 at the SECC (Hall 4A). The winner of the fight is guaranteed a medal.

Shogbamu lost in the 64kg light welterweight to Zack Davies of Wales and Taiwo was beaten by Andrew Maloney of Australia both by the judges’ unanimous decisions.
Judges 1,2 & 3 recorded 28, 28, 27 for Shogbamu as against Davies’ 29, 29 30 respectively, while Taiwo earned 28, 27, 27 points less than Maloney’s 29, 30, 30 respectively.
