Adamawa Acting Gov Denies Plans To Contest Election

The acting governor of Adamawa State, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, has denied rumors that he is scheming to perpetuate himself in office beyond the constitutionally guaranteed three months before elections are conducted for a substantive governor following the impeachment of Murtala Nyako about a fortnight ago.

 

Fintiri, who was Speaker of the House of Assembly before his elevation, said any report linking him to a tenure elongation is not only speculative, but mischievous.

He also expressed worry about the appearance of his campaign posters in the state capital, warning that the development could send wrong signals to the public.

Speaking through his chief press secretary, Solomon Kumangar, Fintiri said he is only committed to serving his constitutional term as acting governor and as such has no desire to stay in office beyond three months.

Information Nigeria reports that posters of the acting governor flooded major streets of Yola while a bill board carrying his portrait, replaced that of former governor Nyako at the entrance of Adamawa State Government House.

Reacting to the development, Kumangar said “The Acting Governor is fully committed to restoring sanity in government and in handing over to an elected governor within three months. Any report insinuating that His Excellency is making efforts to participate in forthcoming election is mischievous and incorrect”.

Describing his boss as a selfless official, Kumangar explained that the policies of the acting governor has made it possible for him to achieve a lot within the prescribed term.

“The acting governor is contented with the constitutional term of office, he is prepared to sanitise government activities to restore hope in government and hand over to an elected governor”, he said.

Fintiri, in another statement, called on individuals and groups who are desirous of expressing their support to him to avoid doing so in a manner that can cast doubts on his credibility and democratic disposition.

“In as much as His Excellency appreciates the goodwill gesture, using the acting governor’s unofficial posters in such an unauthorized manner is not welcome as it could easily send the wrong signals and undermine the credibility of the new administration in its desire to restore justice and equity as a fundamental objective of government”.
